Year of the Snake

Craftsmanship | January 2025

The snake moved quietly, remaining largely unseen throughout the race. As the horse approached the final stretch, the snake revealed itself, having concealed its presence along the journey.

With a sudden and unexpected movement, it crossed ahead, taking sixth place, its position defined by timing and awareness rather than force.

As the zodiac cycle continues, there are moments where movement becomes more subtle, more considered, and where presence is defined not through scale or strength alone, but through precision, awareness and a quiet sense of control.

The Year of the Snake carries this character, representing intuition, transformation and a depth of perception that is often unseen, yet deeply felt. It is an animal that moves with fluidity, guided by instinct and shaped by its environment, revealing its nature gradually rather than all at once.

This sense of measured movement and refinement finds its expression in the Zodiac Cufflink Collection, designed and handcrafted by Patrick Mavros Jnr in our studio in Harare, Zimbabwe. With each year, the collection develops through a deeper understanding of how form can reflect character, allowing the essence of each animal to emerge through balance, proportion and the careful handling of material.

The Year of the Snake cufflinks are shaped through a continuous, flowing line, where the form curves naturally, creating a sense of movement that feels both controlled and effortless. There is no abruptness in the design, only a gradual transition from one element to the next, allowing the piece to hold a quiet rhythm that reveals itself through use and observation.

Detail is introduced with restraint, ensuring that the surface remains refined while still capturing the subtle textures associated with the snake. Light moves across the form in a way that enhances this sense of fluidity, giving the piece a presence that shifts gently depending on how it is worn.

In the natural world, the snake moves close to the ground, guided by sensitivity and awareness rather than force. Its strength lies in its ability to remain unnoticed, to observe, and to respond with precision when required. It is a creature defined by adaptation, by the ability to shed and renew, and by a connection to its surroundings that is both immediate and instinctive.

This understanding is carried into the making of the piece, where sterling silver is shaped through a patient and deliberate process, allowing each curve to be refined by hand until the form feels resolved. The material responds to this approach, holding both the clarity of the design and the subtle variations that come from being crafted rather than produced.

To wear the Year of the Snake is to carry a symbol of transformation and awareness, reflecting a way of moving through the world that values observation, adaptability and a quiet confidence that does not seek to be declared.

For our family, the Year of the Snake represents a moment within the collection where movement becomes more fluid and expression more refined, while remaining grounded in the same principles that guide all of our work. It reflects an understanding that craftsmanship is not only about what is seen, but about how something evolves over time, and how each piece carries with it a sense of continuity, shaped by hand in Africa and connected to a broader story that continues to unfold.
