Year of the Rabbit

Craftsmanship | January 2023

The rabbit approached the river differently, without the strength to cross directly. Instead, it moved with agility, leaping from stone to stone and navigating the current with care and precision.

At one point, it slipped, but managed to catch hold of a floating branch, allowing it to drift gently towards the far bank. Through this combination of instinct and adaptability, the rabbit secured fourth place.

As the rhythm of the zodiac continues, there are moments where the energy of the cycle softens, giving way to a quieter presence that is defined not by force or expression, but by awareness, sensitivity and a more intuitive way of moving through the world.

The Year of the Rabbit carries this character, representing gentleness, perception and a refined understanding of balance within the Chinese zodiac. It is an animal that does not impose itself upon its surroundings, but instead exists in close relationship with them, guided by instinct and an acute sensitivity that allows it to respond with both precision and restraint.

This shift in tone is reflected in the continued evolution of the Zodiac Cufflink Collection, designed and handcrafted by Patrick Mavros Jnr in our studio in Harare, Zimbabwe. With each passing year, the collection develops not through change alone, but through a deepening understanding of form, where the qualities of each animal are interpreted with clarity and care.

The Year of the Rabbit cufflinks are shaped with a sense of lightness and composure, capturing the animal in a poised and attentive state. The form is refined, with lines that are clean and balanced, allowing the character of the rabbit to emerge naturally through proportion rather than ornamentation. Detail is present, but always controlled, ensuring that the piece retains a quiet elegance that reflects the nature of the animal itself.

In the natural world, the rabbit relies on its awareness to navigate its environment, responding quickly yet without disruption. Its strength lies in its sensitivity, in its ability to sense subtle changes and move with agility when needed, maintaining a presence that is both alert and unobtrusive.

This understanding informs the process of making, where sterling silver is shaped through a patient and deliberate approach, allowing each detail to be refined gradually by hand. The material responds to this process, holding the clarity of the design while carrying the subtle variations that define true craftsmanship.

To wear the Year of the Rabbit is to carry a symbol of intuition and balance, reflecting a way of moving through the world that is guided by awareness and shaped by a quiet understanding of one’s surroundings.
