Year of the Rat

Craftsmanship | January 2020

In ancient Chinese tradition, it is said that the zodiac was shaped by a great race, called by the Jade Emperor to determine the order of the years. Each animal was invited to cross a wide river, with their place in the cycle decided by the order in which they reached the far bank.

Among them, the rat was small and easily overlooked, yet highly perceptive. Rather than relying on strength, it relied on awareness, observing the movement of the others before choosing its moment to act.

There are certain moments that mark more than the passing of time. They signal the beginning of a cycle, shaped by tradition and guided by a deeper understanding of how each year carries its own character and meaning.

The Year of the Rat represents this beginning within the Chinese zodiac, holding the first position in a twelve-year cycle and symbolising renewal, awareness and adaptability. It is an animal defined not by dominance, but by instinct — moving through its environment with a sensitivity that allows it to respond to change with quiet precision.

This sense of character informs the introduction of the Zodiac Cufflink Collection in 2020, designed and handcrafted by Patrick Mavros Jnr in our Harare studio. Each piece is shaped as a reflection of the year it represents, not through literal interpretation, but through a considered understanding of form, proportion and the qualities carried by the animal itself.

The Year of the Rat cufflinks are composed with restraint, capturing the animal in a moment of alert stillness. The form is balanced and deliberate, with detail introduced subtly rather than declared, allowing the character of the rat to emerge through line and posture rather than ornamentation. There is a clarity to the design that reflects the nature of the animal — observant, responsive, and quietly assured.

In the natural world, the rat is one of the most adaptable creatures, able to move across environments with ease through awareness and instinct. Its strength lies in its ability to observe and respond, navigating complexity without force and finding opportunity within change. This quiet resilience is what gives the animal its significance within the zodiac, and what anchors the meaning of the piece.

Crafted in sterling silver, each cufflink is shaped by hand, carrying with it the subtle variations that define true craftsmanship. The process is patient and considered, allowing the material to respond to each stage of its formation, and ensuring that the final piece holds both precision and individuality.

To wear the Year of the Rat is to carry a symbol of beginnings that is not defined by declaration, but by awareness. It reflects a way of moving forward that is guided by instinct, shaped by observation, and grounded in the understanding that even the smallest shifts can hold meaning over time.

For our family, this first piece in the Zodiac Cufflink Collection represents more than the beginning of a calendar cycle. It marks the start of a story that unfolds over time, where each year is given form through hand and material, and where each piece becomes part of a wider narrative shaped by craft, heritage and continuity. In this, the Year of the Rat holds a quiet significance — not only as a symbol of beginnings, but as the foundation of what is to follow.
