Year of the Dragon

Craftsmanship | February 2024

The dragon, capable of flight and easily able to reach the far bank first, did not arrive as expected. Instead, it paused along the way, calling rain to nourish the land below and assisting others in their journey.

By the time it reached the finish, it came in fifth, not through lack of strength, but through choice — its position shaped by generosity rather than urgency.

Within the zodiac cycle, there are moments that carry a different weight, where the energy shifts from the quiet and introspective towards something more expansive, defined by presence, strength and a sense of movement that feels both deliberate and far-reaching.

The Year of the Dragon holds this position, representing power, vitality and a depth of character that is expressed not through excess, but through a natural command of form and space. Unlike many creatures of the natural world, the dragon exists within mythology, yet its symbolism remains deeply rooted in human understanding, embodying protection, transformation and an enduring sense of authority.

This transition into a more expressive form is reflected in the Zodiac Cufflink Collection, designed and handcrafted by Patrick Mavros Jnr in our studio in Harare, Zimbabwe. As the collection evolves, each piece responds to the nature of its subject, allowing the character of the animal to guide the design while remaining grounded in the principles of balance, proportion and restraint.

The Year of the Dragon cufflinks are shaped with a greater sense of movement than those that come before, their form flowing rather than contained, with lines that suggest motion without becoming overly intricate. The composition is carefully considered, ensuring that the energy of the dragon is present within the piece, yet held within a structure that allows it to remain refined and wearable.

There is a rhythm to the design, where each curve connects to the next, creating a continuity that mirrors the symbolic nature of the dragon itself. Detail is introduced with intention, never overwhelming the form, but instead supporting it, allowing the piece to reveal itself gradually through light, movement and the way it sits when worn.

The dragon, though not bound to a single landscape, carries meaning across cultures, often associated with protection, wisdom and the balance between strength and control. It is not simply a symbol of power, but of power held with awareness, where presence is guided by purpose rather than display.

This understanding informs the making of the piece, where sterling silver is worked through a process that requires both precision and patience, allowing the material to take on a form that feels both expressive and composed. Each cufflink is shaped by hand, carrying with it the subtle variations that define true craftsmanship, and ensuring that no two pieces are ever entirely the same.

To wear the Year of the Dragon is to carry a symbol of strength that is balanced by restraint, reflecting a way of moving through the world that is both assured and considered, where presence is not imposed, but naturally held.
